Seniors and the Sandias

As an Albuquerque photographer, I’ve seen my fair share of stunning New Mexico sunsets, but there’s something about the Sandia Mountains at sunset that never fails to take my breath away. And honestly, it’s not just because they’re the perfect backdrop for senior photography sessions (although they are).

You see, the Sandias are nature’s drama queens—and I mean that in the best way. Every evening, they light up in a blaze of colors that could make even those of us who have lived her for years stop in our tracks. Fiery reds, soft pinks, and golden hues ripple across their rugged faces like a living watercolor painting. And the best part? They show off year-round. Unlike trees, flowers, and grass that pack up their beauty and go on winter vacation, the Sandias are evergreen showstoppers. Winter, spring, summer, or fall, these mountains are always ready for their close-up.

The Sandias don’t need seasonal touch-ups or a particular time of year to shine. They’re always camera-ready.

As someone who’s been photographing Albuquerque’s incredible landscapes and people for years, I’ve noticed that people often overlook the Sandias as a photography location. Sure, they’ll admire them from their patio while sipping a cup of coffee, but they don’t always think to make them part of their portraits. That’s where I come in! Whether it’s a senior photography session, a family portrait, or even an engagement shoot, the Sandias offer a backdrop that’s both iconic and endlessly versatile.

And let’s talk about the timing, because sunset at the Sandias is nothing short of magical. The low angle of the sun bathes everything in soft, flattering light that makes skin glow and smiles shine. It’s like nature’s very own studio—except it never closes and you don’t have to worry about cars driving into it. (Oh yeah. That’s happened.)

But let’s get real for a second. As much as I love the Sandias, they’ve definitely spoiled me. When you’re used to working with a backdrop that’s always on point, it sets the bar pretty high. No matter how many shoots I do, I’m constantly amazed at how these mountains manage to outdo themselves every single evening. It’s like they’re saying, “Oh, you think last night’s sunset was good? Hold my hiking boots.”

So if you’re in the area and looking for an Albuquerque photographer, whether it’s for senior photography, family portraits, or anything in between, let’s chat! I’d love to help you capture some unforgettable moments with the Sandia Mountains as your backdrop. Because while the seasons may change, the Sandias’ beauty is forever.

And really, shouldn’t your photos be too?
